As a fellow coffee lover, and as a lover of good quality coffee, I’ve been searching for the best coffee places in Houston. This list of based on places having a great & consistent coffee. Later I will write other articles focusing on coffee spots to get work done or studying.
Some of these coffee shops offer various methods of extraction such as Chemex, Aeropress, Dripper V60, French press, along with your typical espressos & lattes.
Common Grounds Uncommon Coffee
Located in downtown across from Phoenicia Specialty foods, this has become one of my to-go places for good coffee. They have a variety of single origin coffees and multiple dripping methods. Besides the great coffee, this place has a great atmosphere and shared area where you can sit and enjoy your cup of coffee or catch up with friends. Pro Tip: grab lunch at Phoenicia and walk across the street to get some good coffee (Parking is free at the Phoenicia parking garage).

Blacksmith
This has been a long-time favorite of mine that continues to deliver great and consistent coffee. Over time they’ve gotten better at offering food options. Pro tip: Grab a Torta or Enchiladas for breakfast & lunch, they’re amazing.
A friendly, and cozy spot near St. Thomas University that’s almost always busy. Additionally as the name suggests, they do offer a siphon coffee option for those coffee drinking aficionados. They have recently added more beer & wine selection for those friends who are not into the caffeinated lifestyle as you are.
Whether it’s grabbing a cup of coffee on the go or sitting down to catch up with a friend, Catalina is a small, but comfy spot to get caffeinated. Seats do go fast so be ready to look for alternative options nearby. TipGrab a taco at Taco Deli or go thrift shopping at The Salvation Army.
Besides their amazing coffee and various selection of beers available, Southside Expresso is one of those places that is small enough to sit down and catch up with a friend or grab a quick cup of coffee on lunch break. Pro tip: Grab some lunch at Aladdins or Velvet Taco and walk over to SouthSide to grab a good cup of coffee, this will help out with the parking.
A small, but great place to stop by after shopping in Rice Village or stopping by during lunch. It’s also a great place to get some work done if you don’t want any distractions. Pro Tip: Stop by during lunch, it’s usually fairly quiet and they have free parking too!
Located in Houston’s 3rd ward, and a short drive from The University of Houston main campus, this homey coffee shop offers a great selection of coffee & tea, and smoothie options as well as great vegan food options. They also have an interesting outdoor patio which makes for a pleasant experience when the weather permits.
Located in the Heights, and two new locations in downtown. This has been a longtime favorite with house-roasted brews, specialized lattes, and a great food selection (Tacos & Sandwiches). Tip: Grab some Chinese Food for lunch @The Rice Box or some tasty tacos from Torchy’s, they’re both walking distance.
